Media

It's easy to find out what's going on in Possibility City - and to hear a couple hundred opinions about it. The daily newspaper, the Courier-Journal, has been one of the country's most-honored papers for years. There's the full boat of television stations, from network affiliates to a pair of public stations, and more than 70 radio stations, beaming out talk, country, rock, oldies, hip hop and religious programming. NPR fans will love Louisville - with three stations, devoted to news, classical and popular music respectively, Louisville listeners have scads of public radio to choose from. But you don't get the full flavor of Possibility City until you turn off the main roads. There are weekly papers, ranging from the sunny Voice-Tribune, eastern Louisville's version of a hometown paper; to the Louisville Defender, longtime voice of the African-American community; to the Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO), a quirky, free alternative paper with a devoted readership. There are other periodicals, as various as glossy Louisville Magazine; Underwired, an arty paper aimed at women; and the sporadically-appearing, nationally-known K Composite, which is like a celebrity magazine focused on ordinary people. LEO publishes a pair of annuals: BOOM, about resurging downtown, and UR Here, a funny and opinionated guide to the city. And bloggers - we've got bloggers, opining on everything from news and media, to access for the disabled, to every flavor of local music. There are websites devoted to advocating for local artists, to analyzing every iota of local sports news and to satirizing the whole deal. LouisvilleMojo.com is a local online community that brags more than a quarter-million unique visitors a month. The news isn't always good, but Possibility City is good at spreading the news.
