The Vice President of Production and Logistics has oversight of all activities within the 280,000 square foot production facility at APH, including the manufacture and distribution of more than 1000 products annually. The VP has the ultimate responsibility for producing the highest-in-the-industry quality braille, large type, and talking books, as well APH’s extensive array of educational aids in a timely manner. Reporting to the President of APH, this Vice President leads 90 Union Production staff; 18 support and technical staff all through 12 supervisors and managers with oversight of the Production, Braille Pre-Production, Manufacturing and Engineering, and Materials/Warehouse. The VP will need to be adept at managing production and distribution activities including process planning, production monitoring and scheduling for a changing mix of make-on-demand, make-to-stock, and make-to-order products. Sales of APH products generate more than $30 million in revenues annually. In 2013, the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers named APH its Mid-Size Manufacturer of the Year.
Additionally, APH plays a growing role in the distribution of products developed by other organizations and corporations serving the blind and visually impaired. The Vice President will be responsible for managing the procurement and sales of those products, and have the foresight to plan for a changing balance between production and distribution.

The Vice President of Production and Logistics will have the following primary responsibilities:
Ensure that all employees, processes, and equipment meet or exceed specified safety requirements. Ensuring a safe work environment is the most critical role of this position.
Manage all processes related to the manufacture of products, as well as the distribution of those products and others manufactured by third parties. Must be knowledgeable about warehousing, distribution, and equipment maintenance.
With input from other leaders within APH, oversee forecasting of production needs and subsequent staffing and materials requirements.
Provide Senior Leadership and Strategic Insight as an Executive by acting as a key partner to other executives; be a strong Communicator, good listener and servant leader; execute solid planning, budgeting and cost management acumen; think strategically, across various business disciplines and create and align key objectives and tactics to match those strategies.
Continually maintain cost effectiveness of production and distribution; ongoing evaluation of how to improve quality, cost, and delivery of products.
Build & grow a strong manufacturing operations leadership team through ensuring team members have the needed skills and knowledge at all levels (director, manager, supervisor, lead); takes action to ensure employees fully understand their roles, responsibilities and performance expectations. Provides ongoing feedback and support. Conducts timely corrective/disciplinary actions that are consistent and well documented. Serves as a coach and role model to others. Sets a high standard of trust and accountability; using people-centric leadership tools to inspire, grow, engage and maximize employees – create a natural accountability environment; and establishment of clear objectives. Lead a culture where support for all production staff and their success is critical to organizational success. Lead initiatives to foster a safe, collaborative, and team-oriented culture.
Through effective staff management, maintain exceptional level of quality in production in order to minimize scrap. Create production tracking and quality control systems to analyze production and determine problems. Suggest processing and staffing changes as needed.
Management of contract negotiations with vendors and the union. Collaboratively works with union leadership and union members to improve measures of operations.
10+ years of manufacturing leadership experience, including both production and distribution.
A demonstrated commitment to process improvement; training in Lean manufacturing practices would be beneficial.
Strong project management experience and a high level of attention to detail.
A high level of knowledge and comfort working with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, particularly Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
Demonstrated ability to accurately forecast costs and capacities for both production output and staffing.
Significant staff management experience; prior experience in contract negotiation and/or union negotiation would be helpful.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff as well as board members and external constituents.
High level of diplomacy; Excellent analysis and decision making capabilities.
Bachelor’s degree required.
